From Talk to Walk: Just Do Something to Get Things Done

The most productive people do not just plan to do something. They get it done. And it is the execution or follow-through part that bridges goals to intended results. This is where many people get off track. So how do you translate talk to action? Sometimes the trick is to start by just doing something. Or to be more specific, to just do something, anything, related to your goals to start building your momentum.

Focus on your most important goals. Everyone has a finite amount of time every day to accomplish things. Having too many goals that branch out to even more sub-goals or mini-goals make it near impossible to accomplish all the things you may think you need to do. Getting the results you want requires choosing your priorities well and focusing on the most important things related to your priority goals.

Build momentum by doing one thing at a time. Multitasking may seem like you are accomplishing a lot of things at once. But it is does not guarantee that you will be productive. It may even get you off track more than when you focus on one thing at a time. Focusing on a single task helps you build the momentum to keep going. So the next time you may be tempted to juggle more than one thing at once, make a conscious effort to concentrate on completing a single task first. You might be surprised how it makes things less stressful.

Seize the moment. Waiting for a “perfect” time to do anything only delays the process and whatever result you may get from doing something now. The present moment is an opportunity that you would not want to miss if you want to get more things done. Use the time to do something no matter how small that takes you a step closer to your goal.

Avoid second-guessing yourself. To get things done, you have to be willing to risk making a mistake or failing. There are no guarantees that anything you set out to do the first time will work. But despite the possibility of failure, you have to avoid second-guessing your decisions. You have to move forward regardless of how unsure you may feel at that given moment.

Manage your time well. You have to put a high value on your time. This helps you to become more selective on where you choose to spend it. Devote your time to things that help you grow and develop as a person, accomplish the work you need to do, and achieve whatever goals you have set for yourself. Anything that does not help you get the results you want is just a potential waste of your time. So you need to pay more attention on where your time goes every single day.
